A little about me

Hi I’m Sheila. I’m an experienced, full-time tutor and teacher from London.

Qualifications and training:

I have a BA in French and German, an MA in Linguistics and possess a certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I am also a qualified practitioner of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

My extensive training and experience in linguistics has meant that I have been able to implement mind-programming techniques in my lessons and workshops, specialising in tailor-making programmes to ensure that I bring out the best in children, teenagers and adults.

Experience:

For the last 15 years, I have not only been working with students as a tutor in languages (French/German), and English Language and Literature, I have also been teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Tutoring includes helping students to achieve their targets as well as preparation for all types of exams including entrance exams, 7+, 11+ and 13+, GCSEs and A-Levels and university exams. From a mentoring point of view, I have assisted students in building their confidence and organising their timetables, as well as effective learning strategies. For older students, I have also guided them with career advice including subject choices for GCSEs/A Levels and personal statements at the university-application stage.

One-to-one and group-based learning:

Most of my sessions have been on a one-to-one basis, although I have also had small groups of up to four - based on the level of the students. Every year my students not only excel in the target subjects, but their overall confidence and self-esteem improve significantly. They are able to apply the planning and revising/reviewing skills they have learned to other humanities subjects, such as Geography and History.

For me, that’s the most amazing reward as I feel these skills are transferable and can prove helpful across all platforms in life.

Primary and secondary school tuition

I have helped countless secondary level students as well as primary level students to surpass their targets. This includes entrance into top establishments like Eton and Cambridge University.

I am also an experienced public speaker; in addition to helping students with speech and language, voice and delivery, I also present study skills and motivational workshops to secondary school students across the UK.

This means preparing extensive PowerPoint presentations consisting of engaging content to cover both full-day and half-day workshops to large classes of up to 40 students.

Training the brain to acquire knowledge

The content of my presentations includes exercises for students, including effective memory techniques, effective planning (using example questions from their syllabus), timetabling, goal setting and mindfulness techniques. Part of mindfulness includes presenting scientific information, which shows them how the brain reacts to stress and how best to overcome anxiety.

I thoroughly enjoy presenting these types of workshops to young people and always feel that they learn so much. What is important is the feedback that I receive: that students have taken away important information and have the will to apply these techniques to both their work at school and in life as a whole, for their overall well-being.

I feel that my skills are in bringing out the best in young people. My communications skills, patience and qualifications all make me an effective tutor for young people. I have a genuine passion for teaching and my tailor-made approach means that I treat every student in a way whereby we can focus on strengthening specific areas which need work. My familiarity with all the main exam boards allows me to cater for students across the spectrum.

Q: How much do you charge?

A: The cost per tutoring session usually starts from £60 - please enquire for specific details and requirements.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

A: A 24-hour notice period is required. If lessons are cancelled less than 24 hours prior, then the full price of the lesson will be charged.

Q: Do you provide online lessons?

A: Yes, I provide lessons on all online platforms including Skype and Zoom. I've been using these platforms for a while and find that students benefits greatly from online video sessions where files can be exchanged, screens can be shared and there really is an interactive feel about them too.

Q: Is any additional charged incurred for travel?

A: Yes, and this is based on location. It's usually capped at £20 but for locations outside of London, the cost will naturally be more.

Q: Do you provide group tutoring sessions?

A: Absolutely. Group tutoring sessions of up to four students can still provide tailor made plans for the individuals within the group; pier learning works efficiently and this kind of set up is more suited to some than others.
